If you are just starting Grim Dawn, and you are currently playing through the first Act, you may have to choose between Duncan or Angrim.
Fear of making a mistake can cause mild anxiety. As well as giving you general advice, I’ll explain the benefits of each smith.
You will first meet Duncan in Burrwitch Outskirts, who will tell you more about Angrim. Talking with Duncan will lead to the quest “Tale Of Two Blacksmiths”. Duncan will tell you that Master Angrim left camp and brought the forging hammer Malleum menhir with him. Duncan will ask you for help in locating the hammer, as it is necessary to make proper gear.
Duncan is a skilled forger of the Arcane type. To empower his crafted gear, he uses Arcane Forging with one of these stats:
- Energy Regeneration is Boosted by 8-16%
- +4-12 Defense Ability
- +2-4% Physique
You will also be able craft some low-level Rare pieces.
- Adept’s Bladed Apple
- Glyphed Archive
- Pistol with Double-Barrel
- Occult Horn
As you can see, Arcane Forging is Duncan’s preferred caster-friendly smith. This makes Duncan more applicable to these types of builds.
Angrim, the Master has fled to the Burrwitch Outskirts to seek the Black Legion’s armorer. You can find him and decide whether to take the hammer back to Duncan to make him your smith in Devil’s Crossing or Angrim.
Depending on your dialogue options, you can convince him to give you the hammer or kill him.
The Practiced Skill is Angrim’s primary forging skill. The following boons are available for his crafted items:
- 3-7% Pierce Resistance
- Armor increases by 24%
- +2-4% Physique
He will also have the following Low-level Rare items for crafting purposes
- Honed Longsword
- Brutal Great Axe
- Rotating Rifle
- Battle Shield
Angrim is the type of smith that works best when working with physical builds such as the BlitzWarlord Build. He also offers Pierce resistance, which is very useful in lategame as there are many situations where you might not have enough Pierce resistance. Although there aren’t many situations in which you would heavily depend on crafted rares for your build, they can still be a bonus if it is physical.
Angrim or Duncan
The short answer to your question is “Pick Duncan” if you are inclined towards a caster, and “Angrim” if it is more physical.
Although the long answer is more complicated, it boils down to not really being important. The way Grim Dawn works, once you have completed the story, you can start over again at the beginning, but in Elite. You can make any choice and choose a different path. If you want to have access to both smiths, you can switch between Elite, Norma and Ultimate difficulty.
Another point worth noting, and one that may even be more important, is that these two smiths don’t represent all of Grim Dawn. You will find many other blacksmiths who can give you bonuses that are often more valuable than those of Angrim and Duncan.
The XP option
Another factor to consider when deciding between Angrim or Duncan is if your preference is for a medium XP Bonus over any later smithing questions.
|Angrim XP||Duncan XP|
You will receive a different amount of experience points depending on which side you choose on normal difficulty after you complete the quest “Tale of Two Blacksmiths”. Although the amount isn’t huge, it can make a difference and be very important. If XP is what you are interested in, then Duncan will give you a 450 XP bonus.
While it doesn’t really matter, it is important to understand why this is so and how you can still get some value from either Angrim nor Duncan. The RP element is subjective, and was therefore not covered in this guide. I recommend that you simply test both options (which are applicable to all Grim Dawn quest choice choices) and see the difference yourself, either with a different character or once your reach Elite difficulty.
