Monster Hunter: World uses Commendations to craft equipment. We’ll discuss where and how to obtain these Commendations.
These items are not like other crafting materials. They cannot be obtained directly from carving or killing a monster. These items are instead given to you as rewards for completing certain quests. Most often, they can be obtained through Zorah Magdaros quests.
Rewards for Quests
- A Colossal Mission – Assigned Quest 6*
- Left Quite the Impression – Optional Quest 6*
- Gaze upon The Dawn – Quest, 6*
These quests are not available. The Colossal Task can be unlocked once you reach HR10 but it is an Assigned Quest that cannot be completed more than once to reap the rewards. Left Quite the Impression can be repeated, but is not always available.
After completing any quest, it will randomly activate. You can then clear it twice more before it disappears again. Gaze Upon The Dawn can, however, be repeated indefinitely as an Event Quest.
It will depend on how the game server puts different quests on rotation. This is the best way to make the most of quests when they are available.
Other sources of commendations
Other than the Zorah Magdaros Quests, there are some other notable quests that can be completed and earn Commendations.
- Gone In a Flash – 5* Optional Quest – (Slay A Kirin)
- The “Power Couple” is being redefined – 5* Optional Quest – Hunt a Rathalos or a Rathian
These quests can both be repeated indefinitely but each has its own conditions. Gone in a Flash is a quest that requires HR8, so you will need to speak to the Impatient Biologist at Astera in order to unlock it.
Redefining the “Power Couple”, requires that you complete two additional quests: Horned Tyrant Below The Sands (5* Optional Quests, HR8+ Hunt a Diablos), and A Fiery Throne atop the Forest (5* Optional Quests, HR8+ Hunt a Rathalos). To receive the quest, you will need to talk with The Armory after completing them.
You can also earn Commendations as a random reward for completing High Rank (6* or above) quests. However, the drop rates are very low and not reliable. The quests listed above will guarantee you one Commendation if you are trying to get enough material for your equipment.
This item should not be confused with High Commendation. It is an identical item that can be obtained for completing specific quests but at higher ranks. After you have earned enough Commendations, it is possible to use them to create useful equipment such as the Brigade armor set or the Defender series weapons.
