Dark Souls is known for being a mystery series, so it is not easy to find the right starting class or burial gift in Dark Souls 2. The journey can be difficult, but if you are able to find the right burial gift and starting class for your playstyle, it will be easier.
A Warrior class with Healing Wares burial gifts will make it easier for new players to get started. Experienced players, however, will prefer to begin as a Sorcerer with the Petrified Something.
There are many reasons to choose one or the other, as well as valid reasons to choose any action. We’ll break down all the burial gifts and starting classes in Dark Souls 2 so that you can choose the right option for you.
Before we get started
Dark Souls 2 is the perfect game for you if you are worried about making a decision that will not be reversed. You don’t have to worry about making a decision that you can’t take back.
There is still a benefit to picking a burial gift and starting class that match your play style. This can make your progress much smoother. We will guide you in the right direction, but the descriptions will be lacking as Dark Souls 2 is a complex game.
Selecting a Class
After the opening cutscene, a little wandering and some more exploration, you will find your way to an older woman who will guide you to your class selection. Here you can choose from one of eight classes: Knight, Swordsman. Bandit, Cleric. Sorcerer. Explorer.
Every class has a unique starting armor set weapon, assorted items, except the Deprived which starts at level 1. There are no items and 6 stats. The Deprived class is ideal for players who want to build their character from scratch. However, it is too complex for most players so this is the last time mentioned.
The Warrior for Beginners is the Best Choice
Although it is difficult to decide which class is best for beginners, the Warrior is unique in that there are no other classes sharing their class. The Warrior is the only class that begins with a shield. This will allow you to learn the mechanics behind blocking and parrying faster than any other class. You can also wear many types gear because of the solid stats.
This combination will help you get more familiar with the game and allow you to invest your extra points in Vigor to gain more health. Dark Souls 2 is all about hack and slash. While spellcasting and long-range bow builds are possible, it’s important to learn how to melee effectively.
Although the Warrior starts with a shield, solid stats, its most significant disadvantage is the Broken Straight Sword, which it uses as its starting weapon. This isn’t a big deal, as you can find many other options very quickly.
Why Veterans choose the Sorcerer
Although every class has similar stats and can equip the same gear eventually, starting items are determined by your class. The Sorcerer was chosen not because of its stats, but because it begins with 30 charges for the spell Soul Arrow. This opens up a long-range play style.
This is the main advantage of it. It will make it easier to fight enemies within range during a few encounters. This is not the case for the main enemies. The boss and the solitary Ogre that you will encounter later both drop items that can later be found in the game.
While starting as a Sorcerer can help you win these difficult battles faster, neither is necessary. Veteran players may enjoy the challenge, and they might be open to moving into melee play if necessary.
Other viable options
You can get any aspect of any class at any point, except the Deprived. All the classes begin leveling far beyond that, as discussed previously. The Knight is reliable in terms of its stats and gear, but it doesn’t come with a shield like the Warrior.
The Swordsman class is great for players who are more attack-oriented. However, the low starting health can make it difficult to handle. The Bandit might be a good choice if you like the idea that you start with a bow. However, there is not much to this class.
The Cleric class is great because of the healing magic you’ll experience with it. However, this class requires some tweaking to get your stats in a comfortable place. The Explorer does not offer any perks, other than the ability to start with a Pharros Lockstone which can help you find certain treasures within the game.
Choose Your Burial Gift
It is more important to choose your burial gift than your class. Even though you may find all items at one point, there will be some that are more valuable than others. The least important burial gifts will be discussed first, then we’ll move on to the more valuable options, and finally our favorite.
There are three options that you should avoid when choosing burial gifts: Nothing, Human Effigy and Homeward Bone. The choice of a burial gift is completely voluntary and there is no penalty. The players will try to make the game as difficult as possible by not grabbing anything.
The Human Effigy doesn’t have much utility as you can find it at multiple locations along your journey. The effect of this item removes all penalties for your health resulting from the deaths you have collected. It will make you more likely that you are invaded in PvP. However, burning it at a bonfire will disallow any multiplayer interactions such as summoning or invading.
You will come across the Homeward Bone many times on your journey. This item will save you from dangerous situations by warping you to the last bonfire lit. It is very useful and you will soon have many of them in your arsenal.
The Beginners’ Options
For those who are just starting their Dark Souls journey, these two items can be very useful. These gifts will be more useful for more advanced players, as they are designed to help players who need extra assistance as they learn the mechanics.
The life-ring is very simple in its application. It serves as a buffer from damage until you find a better replacement. You will eventually find upgrades.
Healing Wares is the best choice for beginners as they make learning Dark Souls 2 easier.
One important note: If you are Deprived, you will get 10 Lifegems. Every other class save the Explorer will receive 20, while the Explorer begins with 30.
Antics that are well-seamed
These options give you a little more utility in your game because they offer unique opportunities to play. While neither of these gifts will make your game more difficult, they can open up new possibilities for creative players to take advantage.
The Tree of Giants Seed is a rare gift that focuses on PvP. All mobs will be hostile to PvP invaders if you use a seed. This makes PvP encounters more fun and interesting because regular invaders will not be bothered as much by monsters that you are.
The Bonfire Ascetic is an additional twist to the PvE game. It can be used to boost the power of monsters that you face. This can be used to take on more difficult challenges and gain new weapons or secrets, which are only available in the New Game Plus. You can also burn it at a bonfire to obtain armor that reduces falling damage or slows down falling speed.
The Petrified Something
Depending on your luck, the most difficult choice may prove useful. This burial gift can be traded for another high-tier item within a short distance from one of the starting areas. Most players choose this item because it offers many benefits that often outweigh any other gifts.
